'Nobody kisses in Hindi films,' says Nikki, one-half of the titular pair of young singles who squabble, flirt and eventually fall in love in this fitfully amusing Bollywood musical. She's right-or at least she used to be. Once upon a time, Bollywood pictures were so chaste, they made such classic Hollywood romances as Gone with the Wind or Casablanca seem positively pornographic. In recent years, though, more and more films have been breaking the 'no-kissing' rule, along with several other taboos. For example, the 2004 drama Phir Milenge made headlines for being the first Bollywood picture to deal with AIDS, and this September's Salaam Namaste featured an out-of-wedlock pregnancy.
And now we have Neal 'n' Nikki, which is basically the Bollywood version of an American sex comedy. This means lots of kissing, racy double entendres and well-endowed women in barely there bikinis.
The one thing it doesn't have-and this is what keeps it from being a true heir to such genre 'classics' as Porky's or American Pie-is any actual nudity. Apparently there still are some lines that Bollywood is unwilling to cross.at least for now. Filmed largely in and around Vancouver, the movie follows Neal (Uday Chopra), a good-looking farm boy with an eye for the ladies and parents who desperately want to see him married. Knowing that he'll never be able to find a suitable wife if he's left to his own devices, Neal allows Mom and Dad to choose his bride for him. Then, with 21 days to go until the wedding, he gets on a plane bound for the big city, where he plans to sow some wild oats by hooking up with one woman a day. He certainly gets off to a great start, scoring a date with one of Vancouver's top models. But the date is spoiled by the antics of a drunken bartender named Nikki (Tanisha Mukerji), who literally drops into Neal's lap.
Once Nikki is in his life, the poor guy finds it virtually impossible to get rid of her. Not only does she have a habit of turning up at the wrong time (like when he's about to go skinny-dipping with a busty blonde), but she forces him to help her in her own crazy plan to make her ex-boyfriend jealous.
Neal and Nikki are completely wrong for each other-and that's exactly the reason they wind up in each other's arms. Clocking in at a brief (by Bollywood standards) 122 minutes, Neal 'n' Nikki makes up in energy for what it lacks in technical polish.

And while the two leads aren't particularly good actors (although they seem like Bogie and Bacall when compared to the hilariously awful supporting cast), they do seem to be enjoying themselves. Writer-director Arjun Sablok delivers a few well-aimed jabs at his industry as well.
In addition to the aforementioned bit of dialogue about the lack of kissing in Hindi films, the big love song is staged as a parody of traditional Bollywood ballads. The other musical sequences are equally fun, particularly the catchy title song, which flashes back to Neal and Nikki's school days. But Sablok can only poke fun at the formula for so long before his movie inevitably succumbs to it. The last act of the film is filled with all the usual misunderstandings and last-minute surprises that are routine in Bollywood comedies. Obviously, the director had to play by the rules just enough to get his movie made and distributed. Maybe by the time he makes his next movie, a few more taboos will have fallen by the wayside. -Ethan Alter.
