Hi: My recommendation is to use the Vista driver from your PC's support and driver page. If the driver doesn't automatically install when you run the file, then close out of any error windows and manually install the driver. To do that, click on the video adapter in the device manager. Then click on the driver tab. Click on update driver. Select the Browse my computer for software, and browse to the installation folder that was created when you ran the file. And btw this is the only possible and default resolution when S3 graphic driver is installed in Windows 8.

I've roled back S3 driver to the basic Windows one. Changed Accelerated graphics configuration in Internet Options for using software rendering as described in a previous post. Then I've updated all Win 8 Applications from the Store (as it was working) - 15 updates in total. Then I installed the S3 driver again.

And now everything is working perfectly fine. I am not sure all this makes sense and niether I can explain the reasons.
